BECOME A DRIVING INSTRUCTOR WITH
GO WITH GER
Local, in-person ADI training with support from your first step through to qualification and beyond.
Becoming a driving instructor is about more than passing three tests.
The aim is to develop the knowledge, driving ability, coaching skills and judgement needed to become a safe, confident and professional driving instructor.
At Go With Ger, your training is delivered locally and in person by Geraint Griffiths. We don’t outsource our instructor training and we don’t use cheap training packages as a way of tying people into expensive long-term franchise agreements.
TRAIN TO BECOME AN INSTRUCTOR — NOT JUST TO PASS THE TEST
Passing the ADI qualification process is obviously important, but achieving the minimum standard required to pass shouldn’t be the end goal.
Your training should prepare you for the reality of teaching people to drive.
That means learning how to plan effective lessons, manage risk, adapt your teaching to different pupils, recognise when learning is taking place and know when to coach, question, demonstrate or simply give clear instruction.
The goal is to help you become the kind of instructor you would want teaching someone you care about.

A BLENDED APPROACH TO ADI TRAINING
I don’t believe Parts 1, 2 and 3 should be treated as three completely separate stages of your development.
My approach uses blended learning, bringing together the knowledge required for Part 1, the driving skills developed for Part 2 and the coaching and instructional skills assessed at Part 3.
1
From the beginning, we’ll look at not only what you’re doing, but why you’re doing it and how you could eventually help a learner develop that same skill.
2
That means your Part 2 driving becomes an opportunity to start developing Part 3 skills, while the knowledge you’re building for Part 1 is continually connected to real driving and teaching situations.
3
This becomes particularly important if you’re considering a trainee licence (pink badge). A trainee licence allows you to gain experience giving paid driving instruction before you’re fully qualified, so I believe your development as an instructor needs to begin well before you reach Part 3.
If you’re going to be charging pupils and taking responsibility for their lessons, you should already be developing the skills to plan learning, manage risk, adapt your approach and understand the needs of the person sitting beside you.
Three tests. One joined-up approach to becoming a driving instructor.
THREE TESTS — ONE DEVELOPMENT JOURNEY
1
— Theory and Hazard Perception
Part 1 is about developing the knowledge that will underpin your future career as a professional driving instructor — not simply memorising enough answers to pass a test.
As part of your training, you’ll receive free access to Theory Test Pro, giving you a structured way to prepare for the theory and hazard perception elements and track your progress as you study.
You’ll also receive a recommended reading list of books and resources to purchase, helping you develop a broader understanding of driving, road safety and the knowledge you’ll eventually need to pass on to your own pupils.
The aim isn’t just to get you through Part 1. It’s to start building the knowledge you’ll need as a professional driving instructor.
2
— Driving Ability
Part 2 should be about considerably more than getting through another driving test.
We’ll work on developing a high standard of driving, planning, awareness, judgement and vehicle control so that your own driving provides a strong foundation for teaching others.
Because of the blended approach, we’ll also start considering your driving from an instructor’s perspective — developing your understanding of why decisions are being made and how those skills could eventually be developed in a learner.
3
— Instructional Ability
This is where everything comes together.
We’ll develop your ability to deliver client-centred lessons, identify learning needs, agree appropriate goals, manage risk and use teaching and coaching strategies that suit the individual sitting beside you.
Rather than learning a script for the Part 3 test, the focus is on understanding why you’re making each decision as an instructor.
TRAINING BUILT AROUND THE INDIVIDUAL
People don’t all learn in the same way — and neither do trainee instructors.
Training is adapted around your existing experience, strengths and development needs rather than simply working through a predetermined script.
We’ll work on areas including:
- Client-centred learning
- Lesson planning and goal setting
- Risk management
- Effective questioning
- Coaching and instructional techniques
- Giving useful feedback
- Developing pupil responsibility
- Recognising when learning is taking place
- Adapting lessons when things don’t go to plan
- Preparing for Parts 2 and 3
- Preparing for the reality of working as an ADI
PDI / TRAINEE LICENCE SUPPORT
For suitable trainees, a trainee licence can provide invaluable experience delivering real lessons while continuing your development towards Part 3. Where appropriate, I can provide training, observation and ongoing development during this stage.
I deliberately keep this side of the business small. I’m interested in developing good instructors, not simply putting as many trainee instructors as possible into driving-school cars.
Any sponsorship arrangement would therefore be discussed individually to make sure it’s right for both of us.
